I have a friend who works with her children every year to come up with a family slogan. I admit, for two years, I thought it was stupid. I mean no disrespect by that, I sincerely like her (and that is rare for me), but it just wasn’t something that people like me do – people who think outside of the box and live outside of the box, who never match and who price yet kits online for “fun things to do on a Saturday afternoon.” I write lesbian romance and think about sex quite often. I do not come up with clever yearly family slogans that bring everyone in our little pod together. Most assuredly, I am not that mom.
Except, maybe I could be that person. I can’t be that mom, the one who homeschools (family slogan lady homeschools) and grows a garden in the backyard for all-natural produce. But I can be the person who uses a slogan to kickstart a fantastic new year for myself.
So, without further ado, I give you 2016, the year of #portergivesback.
I realized, in lieu of creating a lengthy list of resolutions I have no intention of keeping, it would behoove me to make a list of all of the things that I want to do in 2016. Then, as I looked at the list, it occurred to me (in glaring red neon letters) that most of the things I wanted to do were geared around giving back to all of the people who have helped me along the way – my parents, my wife, my kids, my friends. I want to make big gestures of appreciation, and say all of the things that I should have been saying all through the years. I want to let the people I love know that I love them.
Stay tuned for visual proof…
